The whole design is made from just seven tile shapes, repeated 237 times. Each tile carries a few short lines, and the lines are placed so that they always meet the next tile's lines exactly. Put the tiles side by side and the short lines join into long ribbons that travel across the whole field. Five large ten-petal rosettes anchor the design, one in the middle and one toward each corner. Around them, ten-sided tiles carry a pattern of hooks and chevrons instead of the star you would expect, and small diamonds gather in pinwheels of five. Halfway between the rosettes, the ribbons close into a small loop. It is the one place where the pattern breaks its own rhythm. Drawn tile by tile, then woven over and under.
